Red Rock Walk

After a long snowshoe trek across the uneven frozen surface of Georgian Bay I reached Red Rock, both the island and the prevailing wind and wave side of the light tower sheathed with ice.

Double Duty

I borrow the rope from my boating safety kit to hang my bear barrel, attaching the canister to lob it over the branch first, as well as use it as an extra container.

Curves

This scene appealed to me with its common element of curves, of the pine, rock and the edge of the clouds.

Loaded For Bear

Ready to load everything I need to spend a couple of nights camping, via my 9-foot kayak. Storage is very limited but it all fits except for the bear barrel, which I strap behind the cockpit.

Crayfish Carcass

The bleached carcass of a crayfish greeted us when we landed at Henrietta Point, the southernmost tip of Franklin Island. It is one of the most popular camping spots for its easy accessibility, and one of the most interesting for its rock formations and abstract designs.

Lone Pine

Adam Brown

Adam Brown served as the Red Rock Light Tower keeper from 1898 to 1937, the longest span of any keeper in the Parry Sound area. A former fisherman from the neighbouring Mink Islands, he manned it until he was 75 years of age. He passed away in 1968 at 106, his name and role chiselled into the rock beside the tower for posterity.
